Conference on the Economics of Payments XV: Call for Papers
The Bank of Japan is hosting the Economics of Payments XV conference. The event will take place on November 9-10, 2026, at the Bank of Japan Head Office in Tokyo.
The conference brings together scholars, academics, and experts from national and international institutions with the aim of fostering debate and research on the functioning, evolution, and regulation of both retail and wholesale payment systems.
Call for Papers
Interested researchers or policymakers are invited to submit research or policy-related papers on the topics of payments and financial market infrastructures, including but not limited to:
- Evolution in the traditional retail and wholesale payments and the impact on payment choices, the real economy, and the financial system
- Innovations in the retail and wholesale payments landscape (e.g., distributed ledger technology, fintech, fast payments, artificial intelligence), their interplay with traditional payments, and implications for policy and regulations
- Risks for the safety and efficiency of payment, clearing, and settlement systems, including developments in fraud detection
- New forms of currencies such as CBDCs and stablecoins
- Cross-border payments and the international monetary system
- New data, methods, and AI applications in research on payments
The deadline for submissions of completed papers is May 31, 2026 (extended abstracts will also be considered). Please send a PDF file (Max 10MB) via email to post.imes21@boj.or.jp. Accepted papers will be selected for either sessions or poster presentations. If you wish to be considered only for sessions, please indicate this explicitly in your submission email. Authors of accepted contributions will be notified in July 2026. Limited travel funding for academic speakers will be available. The conference will be held by invitation only.
