Chinese coins (toraisen) came into use in Japan from the middle of the 12th century through to the 16th century. Coins circulated widely beginning in the 13th century, along with the growth of the commercial activities.From the latter half of the 15th century, coins which had been privately minted in Japan or overseas began to circulate in response to a shortage of coins.
