As the war situation worsened, the metal for the subsidiary coins was in extremely short supply. As an emergency measure, Bank of Japan notes of unit less than one yen, such as 10 sen, 5 sen, were issued. These forms of paper currency were not subsidiary coins or government banknotes by the Temporary Currency Law, but Bank of Japan notes by the Bank of Japan Law.
