For a short period just after the Meiji Restoration, many clans and prefectures issued their local currencies called Hansatsu and Fukensatsu, valid only in their own regions. Most of them were issued as small denomination currency to fulfill the demand for small change, and denominated in sen, the unit of account for copper coins. These hansatsu and fukensatsu were all replaced with the new currencies issued by the new Meiji government by the year Meiji 12 (1879). |
