| "Tsutsumi Kingin" was a sealed package containing a certain quantity of gold or silver coins. This was used for settling large amount of transactions without opening the package. |
|
It was sealed by the Kinza gold mint, the Ginza silver mint of the Tokugawa Shogunate government, or by private money exchange houses called Ryogaesho, and bore the amount of money in the package and the signature of the sealer on the obverse. "Tsutsumi Kingin" were circulated as a medium of exchange for large transactions. Since their value was endorsed by the high reputation of the sealer, nobody tried to open the package to check if the exact amount was included or not. |
